Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
High-gain condenser microphones or uncoupled desk-mounted boom arms transmit mechanical vibrations directly from mechanical keyboard switches, mouse clicks, and desk bumps into the capsule diaphragm via structure-borne acoustic coupling. Without dynamic downward expansion or proper shock mounting, these transient mechanical noises equal or exceed vocal volume during pauses in speech.

Actionable Fix:
1. Mount the microphone on a decoupled scissor-arm boom attached to an adjacent shelf or heavy floor stand, isolated by an elastic suspension shock mount.
2. Configure a downward expander / dynamic noise gate in the audio chain with a fast attack (1–2ms), 150ms release, and an expansion threshold set 3–5dB below normal speaking level.
3. Switch mechanical keyboards to lubricated linear silent switches (e.g., Cherry MX Silent Red) and place large neoprene desk mats underneath peripherals to absorb physical impact transients.

Pro Tip:
Prefer tight hypercardioid or dynamic moving-coil microphones over wide cardioid condensers for live desk setups, positioning the microphone's null angle (120–180 degrees off-axis) directly facing the keyboard.
