Smooth gradients rendered across large canvas areas stretch 8-bit color values (only 256 tonal steps per channel) across thousands of pixels. When converted or compressed to standard 8-bit sRGB, step thresholds become stark, unsightly stepped contour bands.

Actionable Fix:
1. Enable 16-bit color depth mode in your editing software while constructing smooth gradients to prevent internal mathematical stepping.
2. Add a 1%–2% monochromatic dither or uniform grain texture layer over the gradient to break up stepping thresholds smoothly.
3. Zoom in to 100% and inspect gradient ramp transitions across dark zones to confirm smooth tonal gradation without visible stepped banding lines.

Pro Tip:
Adding just 1.5% dither noise to smooth gradients eliminates 8-bit color banding completely, keeping backgrounds silky and professional on all screens.
