Eye brightening clips catchlights and makes the eyes appear unnaturally flat.

Problem

Eye brightening clips catchlights and makes the eyes appear unnaturally flat.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Applying aggressive Dodge tool brushing or unconstrained Curves adjustments directly over the entire eye area blows out natural cornea catchlights to pure white (RGB 255,255,255) and washes out iris depth. This eliminates the spherical curvature of the eye, giving the subject an eerie, zombie-like stare.

Actionable Fix:
1. Brighten the iris selectively using a dedicated Curves layer with a radial mask restricted to the lower two-thirds of the iris opposite the primary light source.
2. Preserve original catchlights by excluding them from brightening adjustments, maintaining their defined specular reflection shape.
3. Check the sclera (eye whites) to ensure brightness does not exceed 85% luminance; pure white sclera immediately triggers an artificial appearance.

Pro Tip:
Brighten only the "pie slice" of the iris directly opposite the main catchlight (simulating natural subsurface eye scattering); this creates brilliant, lifelike eyes without the creepy, flat "demon glow".
