Proxy generation creates unusable files because the chosen proxy format is not supported by the destination workflow.

Problem

Proxy generation creates unusable files because the chosen proxy format is not supported by the destination workflow.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Generating proxies with incompatible codec profiles, unsupported color bit-depths, or non-standard frame dimensions causes destination editing systems or mobile review workflows to reject the files. For instance, creating ProRes 422 proxies for Windows-based editors without ProRes decoders, or generating 10-bit H.265 proxies for legacy mobile devices, results in black frames, playback crashes, or unsupported file format errors.

Actionable Fix:
1. Standardize proxy generation on universally supported codecs: choose Apple ProRes Proxy for macOS environments or Avid DNxHR LB / 8-bit H.264 (CFR) for cross-platform workflows.
2. Maintain identical frame rates, audio track layouts, and aspect ratios between proxy and camera master files, downscaling resolution cleanly to 1920x1080.
3. Test-open sample proxy files across all target client devices and editing systems to confirm instant playback and metadata compatibility.

Pro Tip:
Configure proxy presets to preserve source camera audio track configurations (e.g., 4-channel discrete audio); mismatched audio channels will prevent NLEs from successfully attaching proxies.
