Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Editorial workflows often transcode incoming raw footage to high-bitrate master intermediate codecs (e.g., ProRes 4444 or DNxHR HQX) at full native capture resolution (6K/8K). High-tier intra-frame codecs at 8K generate data rates exceeding 2,000 Mbps (nearly 1 Terabyte per hour of footage). When hundreds of hours of documentary or multi-camera footage are transcoded at these excessive tiers for rough-cut editing, shared SAN/NAS arrays and local NVMe drives rapidly exhaust their capacity.

Actionable Fix:
1. Implement a two-tier proxy workflow: transcode offline editing media to ProRes Proxy or DNxHR LB at 1080p resolution (targeting ~36 to 45 Mbps).
2. Reserve top-tier intermediate codecs (ProRes 422 HQ / DNxHR HQ) strictly for final online conforming, VFX plates, and delivery mastering.
3. Calculate aggregate project storage requirements before ingest to ensure proxy footage consumes less than 5% of primary production storage arrays.

Pro Tip:
Set proxy scaling to 1/2 or 1/4 source resolution (e.g., 1080p proxy for 4K/8K source); modern NLEs scale proxies seamlessly to match timeline dimensions without disrupting framing or keyframe coordinates.
