Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Hardware-accelerated H.264 encoders (such as NVENC, Intel QuickSync, or Apple VideoToolbox) prioritize throughput and latency over deep rate-distortion optimization. In scenes with extreme high-frequency motion (confetti, water splashes, high-speed camera whips), hardware encoders often cap instantaneous bitrate allocation due to fixed VBV (Video Buffer Verifier) buffer constraints and limited lookahead frame depth. As a result, the encoder starves fast-moving frames, causing noticeable blocky compression artifacts and color banding.

Actionable Fix:
1. Switch encoder implementation from Hardware Encoding to Software Encoding (x264 / MainConcept CPU pipeline) with a 2-Pass VBR profile.
2. If hardware encoding must be used, switch from VBR to Constant Quantization Parameter (CQP / CRF) with a value of 16-18, or increase the maximum bitrate ceiling to 2.5x the target bitrate.
3. Inspect fast-motion frames at 200% magnification on a calibrated monitor to confirm that micro-textures and motion edges remain free of 8x8 pixel macroblocks.

Pro Tip:
When exporting high-motion content for YouTube, upscale 1080p footage to 4K (3840x2160) at 60-80 Mbps before upload to force YouTube's ingest servers to allocate the high-fidelity VP09/AV01 codec profile.
