10-bit video capture provides 1,024 discrete tonal levels per color channel, enabling smooth gradients across skies and backlit walls. Exporting intermediate timelines through an 8-bit codec (such as standard H.264 or 8-bit ProRes 422 Proxy) truncates color depth to just 256 levels per channel. When this intermediate file is subsequently graded or recompressed, the missing tonal quantization produces severe stepped color banding (posterization).

Actionable Fix:
1. Configure all intermediate export presets strictly to 10-bit or 12-bit mezzanine codecs, such as Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, or Avid DNxHR HQX.
2. In project export settings, ensure 'Render at Maximum Bit Depth' (32-bit float) is explicitly checked.
3. Inspect high-gradient areas (like blue skies or soft shadows) on a calibrated 10-bit grading monitor to confirm zero visible banding steps.
