Overlooking that a traffic source can gain share simply because another source declined.

Problem

Overlooking that a traffic source can gain share simply because another source declined.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Traffic source composition represents relative proportions of total traffic, meaning any denominator contraction shifts relative percentages upward. When search volume declines or an external syndication contract expires, the remaining stable sources automatically capture a larger percentage share. Creators mistake this mathematical artifact for organic growth in the surviving channel.

Actionable Fix:
1. Open Advanced Analytics, select "Traffic source", and switch the chart display from "100% stacked area" to "Line chart" showing raw absolute views.
2. Export the monthly traffic breakdown to CSV and compute month-over-month view deltas for each specific source independently.
3. Confirm whether an expanding source's absolute view count grew by more than 5% before reallocating editorial resources toward that format.

Pro Tip:
When analyzing traffic shifts, look at the absolute numbers of the declining source first; seasonal dips in Search or school-year drops in external traffic frequently masquerade as Browse feature growth.
