Improper analog gain staging at the microphone preamp leaves the analog signal close to the system's electrical noise floor. When subsequent digital gain or software faders are boosted to compensate for low volume, the entire underlying noise floor—including preamp hiss, ADC quantization noise, and room rumble—is amplified proportionally.

Actionable Fix:
1. Adjust the physical analog preamp gain knob on the audio interface/mixer so spoken vocal peaks consistently register between -18 dBFS and -12 dBFS on digital meters during natural projection.
2. Reset software faders, digital plugin gains, and encoder audio multipliers in OBS/vMix back to unity gain (0 dB), avoiding artificial post-conversion gain boosting.
3. Run an ambient room silence check with the talent quiet; verify that the ambient room noise floor hovers at or below -55 dBFS to ensure clean dynamic headroom.

Pro Tip:
If using low-output dynamic broadcast microphones (such as the Shure SM7B or Electro-Voice RE20), insert an inline ultra-clean JFET pre-preamp (like a Cloudlifter or FetHead) to supply +20 dB to +25 dB of transparent gain before noisy interface preamps.
