Email account recovery is weaker than YouTube account recovery and becomes the attacker’s easiest route.

Problem

Email account recovery is weaker than YouTube account recovery and becomes the attacker’s easiest route.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Creators harden YouTube Studio with 2FA but leave the underlying recovery email or phone number vulnerable to SMS interception, SIM swapping, or weak automated password resets. Attackers exploit this asymmetric security posture to reset the primary email account and seize the channel.

Actionable Fix:
1. Remove all SMS and voice-based recovery options from the primary Google Workspace or recovery email accounts.
2. Replace legacy recovery methods with FIDO2 security keys, enterprise backup codes stored in an offline vault, and an isolated administrative recovery domain.
3. Verify that the secondary recovery email address itself enforces hardware-based two-factor authentication and has no public associations.

Pro Tip:
Place a carrier-level Port Freeze and high-security PIN lock on mobile accounts associated with administrative recovery to prevent unauthorized SIM swapping.
