An OAuth application receives broader Google permissions than the creator realizes during a rushed setup.

Problem

An OAuth application receives broader Google permissions than the creator realizes during a rushed setup.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
During rapid onboarding, creators often click "Select all" or accept pre-checked scope bundles without reading the granular permissions requested by third-party tools. Granting full management scopes (youtube.force-ssl) instead of read-only access (youtube.readonly) creates unnecessary privilege escalation and attack surface.

Actionable Fix:
1. Scope Minimization Audit: Review permissions in Google Account Security and identify apps that possess "Full access" or "Manage your YouTube videos" instead of "View".
2. Re-Authenticate with Granular Scopes: Disconnect the application, re-initiate the OAuth flow, and selectively deselect optional high-privilege scopes, granting only required read-only permissions.
3. Scope Compliance Verification: Confirm in the app's permission profile that granted scopes match the minimum required technical specifications.

Pro Tip:
Never click 'Select All' on Google authorization screens. If an analytics tool asks for permission to 'Edit and delete videos', uncheck that box—a pure reporting tool only needs read-only access.
