Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Positioning a rack-mounted NAS directly adjacent to an editing workstation without proper hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment causes thermal recirculating loops. The hot exhaust air expelled from the NAS hard drives and power supplies is pulled directly into the workstation's cold air intake, raising baseline ambient intake temperatures by 10°C–15°C.

Actionable Fix:
1. Thermal Baffle & Rack Isolation: Install blanking panels and physical thermal baffles inside the server rack or cabinet to strictly isolate front cold air intake from rear hot air exhaust.
2. Equipment Repositioning: Relocate the NAS unit to a lower rack unit or dedicated server enclosure separated from the editing workstation intake vents.
3. Air Temperature Gradient Verification: Measure ambient intake temperatures at the workstation chassis front grill using an infrared thermometer to verify intake air does not exceed 22°C–24°C during active NAS transfers.

Pro Tip:
Never let your NAS exhaust hot air directly into the front fans of your editing PC; hot air recirculation creates a thermal trap that can overheat both systems during heavy network transfers.
