Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Standard IEEE 802.3x Flow Control transmits Ethernet PAUSE frames when a receiving switch port buffer fills up. When a low-tier switch experiences congestion on a single high-traffic NAS port, PAUSE frames propagate backwards to the switch buffer, stalling unrelated traffic across other creator workstations and streaming encoders.

Actionable Fix:
1. Asymmetric / Priority Flow Control (PFC) Configuration: Disable legacy 802.3x Flow Control on all switch ports and enable 802.1Qbb Priority Flow Control (PFC) on managed switches to isolate traffic classes.
2. Port Buffer Allocation Tuning: Allocate dedicated switch port buffers to high-throughput video ports rather than sharing a single shallow pool across all ports.
3. Switch Drop Counter Audit: Check switch port error counters via SNMP or management web GUI during peak editing hours to verify zero PAUSE frame storms or buffer overruns.

Pro Tip:
Turn off generic 802.3x Flow Control on your network switch; when one computer does a heavy download, flow-control PAUSE frames can freeze network video playback on every other computer in the studio.
