Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
To meet energy efficiency standards, modern network adapter drivers default to aggressive Energy-Efficient Ethernet and "Selective Suspend" power-saving states. When an editor pauses the timeline to review a cut, the NIC drops into a low-power idle state; pressing play triggers a wake-up handshake delay that freezes video playback.

Actionable Fix:
1. Power Management Setting Disablement: In Device Manager > Network Adapter Properties > Power Management, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
2. Energy Efficient Mode Deactivation: In the NIC driver's Advanced tab, disable "Energy Efficient Ethernet", "Green Ethernet", and "Ultra Low Power Mode".
3. Timeline Idle Wake Test: Leave the NLE timeline paused for 10 minutes, then press play; verify that video playback starts instantly with zero dropped frames or audio stutter.

Pro Tip:
Disable power-saving on your workstation's 10GbE network card; otherwise, pausing your timeline for five minutes will put your network port to sleep and make your video stutter when you hit play.
