Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Placing your primary NAS and secondary backup NAS on the same electrical circuit and UPS creates a single point of electrical failure. A high-voltage lightning strike, utility surge, or UPS transformer catastrophic failure will propagate across the shared circuit, destroying both the primary and backup systems simultaneously.

Actionable Fix:
1. Independent Circuit & UPS Isolation: Connect the backup destination to a physically separate electrical circuit and an independent, dedicated pure-sine-wave UPS.
2. Offsite 3-2-1 Backup Implementation: Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule by deploying at least one copy of critical media offsite (remote office, secondary NAS at another facility, or encrypted cloud storage).
3. Electrical Grounding & Surge Audit: Install Type 2 surge protective devices (SPD) at the distribution panel and verify outlet ground resistance using a receptacle circuit tester.

Pro Tip:
Having a backup NAS plugged into the exact same wall outlet as your main NAS isn't true redundancy; one lightning surge or electrical short will fry both machines at the same instant.
