Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Consumer desktop HDDs lack Rotational Vibration (RV) sensors and advanced firmware vibration compensation. In 4-bay to 8-bay NAS chassis, rotational harmonics from adjacent drive spindles cause head positioning off-track errors; the drive must repeatedly wait for platter rotations to re-align heads, creating massive random latency spikes that stall video playback.

Actionable Fix:
1. Enterprise / NAS Drive Migration: Replace consumer drives (e.g., WD Blue/Green, Seagate Barracuda) with NAS/Enterprise class drives (e.g., WD Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf Pro, or Toshiba MG series) equipped with hardware RV sensors.
2. Chassis Drive Dampening Installation: Ensure all drive caddies utilize silicone isolation grommets and ensure screws are torqued properly to dampen mechanical resonance across the backplane.
3. Latency Metric Monitoring: Monitor per-disk I/O wait times and disk utilization percentages using NAS CLI utilities (`iostat -xz 1`) during concurrent multi-stream playback.

Pro Tip:
Never put cheap consumer desktop hard drives into a multi-bay NAS; without rotational vibration sensors, the drives vibrate against each other, causing head misalignment and stuttering timeline playback.
