Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
USB-C cables contain an embedded E-Marker (Electronic Marker) chip that communicates cable capabilities (current rating, passive vs. active, USB 3.2 vs. Thunderbolt 3/4) via the CC pin. Swapping in a replacement cable with an E-Marker advertising only USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) causes the host Thunderbolt controller to disable PCIe tunneling and renegotiate down to USB mode, breaking daisy-chained devices.

Actionable Fix:
1. Certified 40Gbps E-Marker Cable Deployment: Install a certified 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 cable featuring an authenticated 40Gbps E-Marker chip.
2. Bus Topology Inspection: Check the negotiated link mode in Intel Thunderbolt Control Center or macOS System Information to confirm the chain negotiates at full 40Gbps Thunderbolt speed.
3. Daisy-Chain Enumeration Verification: Verify that all downstream devices in the Thunderbolt chain (RAID, second display, or card reader) mount and operate stably.

Pro Tip:
Never grab a random USB-C cable to connect your Thunderbolt RAID; if the cable's internal E-marker chip lacks 40Gbps certification, your entire storage chain will drop to slow USB speeds.
