Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Installing an excessively thick thermal pad (e.g., 2.0mm instead of 0.5mm or 1.0mm) bends the M.2 PCB, lifting the controller die off the contact plane or preventing the motherboard heatsink from seating flush. This introduces air gaps that insulate the controller, leading to severe thermal runaway and throttling.

Actionable Fix:
1. Thermal Pad Caliper Measurement: Measure the gap between the installed SSD and heatsink using precision calipers and install the exact thickness pad specified by the motherboard manual (typically 0.75mm to 1.0mm).
2. PCB Flatness Inspection: Inspect the M.2 drive after tightening screws; confirm the SSD circuit board remains completely straight without upward or downward bowing.
3. Thermal Imaging / Telemetry Test: Monitor drive temperatures under load with HWiNFO64, ensuring Temperature Sensor 2 (Controller) remains within 15°C of Temperature Sensor 1 (NAND).

Pro Tip:
If an M.2 drive PCB bends when you tighten the heatsink screw, your thermal pad is too thick; excessive thickness warps the circuit board and creates thermal air gaps.
