A card's remaining-capacity estimate becomes misleading after fragmented clip deletion, causing the operator to underestimate how quickly continuous recording will stop.

Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Deleting isolated clips directly in-camera produces non-contiguous fragmented clusters across the NAND flash. Flash memory controllers cannot write to fragmented blocks without costly erase cycles, causing camera firmware to miscalculate remaining recording time and prematurely stop recording mid-take.

Actionable Fix:
1. Strict No-Deletion Protocol: Prohibit in-camera clip deletion during shoots; keep all takes on the card until the card is fully offloaded and verified.
2. Routine In-Camera Formatting: Perform a clean in-camera format prior to every production block rather than manually deleting individual media files.
3. Allocation Map Verification: Mount the card on a workstation and inspect free space allocation via disk utility tools to verify contiguous block availability.

Pro Tip:
Never press "Delete Clip" in-camera to free up space; manual deletions fragment the flash translation layer (FTL) and cause the camera to drop frames unexpectedly on subsequent takes.
