Solution

Root Cause / Diagnostic:
Modern smartphones frequently sum left and right audio channels into mono during speaker playback, and certain mobile app feeds force mono downmixes. If a stereo music track incorporates wide artificial stereo imaging, out-of-phase panning, or stereo chorusing, summing the channels causes destructive phase cancellation. This cancels fundamental instrumental frequencies, hollowing out the mix and leaving brittle, comb-filtered artifacts.

Actionable Fix:
1. Insert a correlation meter plugin (such as iZotope Insight or Flux Stereo Tool) on the master bus and ensure phase correlation stays between +0.6 and +1.0.
2. Toggle mono summing on the master monitoring chain in your DAW/NLE during mixing to detect comb filtering, hollow vocals, or disappearing instruments.
3. Narrow the stereo width of secondary synth and music beds below 300 Hz to pure mono (100% centered) using an M/S (Mid/Side) matrix equalizer.

Pro Tip:
Always keep bass frequencies below 150 Hz dead-centered in mono to preserve low-end power and eliminate phase cancellation on mobile devices.
